El año 2004, la tribu metal de Chile sufrió un desaire. Más bien, fue una afrenta por partida doble. Por un lado, era la gira de una banda antes imponente que se dejaba seducir por un dudoso gusto moderno, pero que aún tenía material antiguo que ofrecer. Por otro estaba los de siempre, fieles los años 94 y 99, que creían que sólo se trataba de un paréntesis de pésima referencia.
Ni lo uno u otro se vio anoche en el cuestionado Club Hípico. Ni los resabios de esquemas sonoros importados a la fuerza, ni fieles descorazonados. Más bien la prueba fehaciente de que hay thrash y hay metal para rato, junto con corazones y gargantas que los sigan de cerca.
Antes del ingreso de Metallica, los nacionales Criminal daban rienda suelta con una revisión en formato comprimido de sus cinco discos y más de quince años de trayectoria. Un agradecido, y también conciente de que sólo les tocaba calentar el ambiente, Anton Reisenegger alentó a la galería en la media hora que duró el show de la banda chilena, radicada en Europa.
Un relámpago: el repertorio antiguo
A las nueve de la noche, las más de 45 mil almas apostadas en el cuestionado reducto de fustas y apuestas coreaban el nombre de los “cuatro jinetes” con ansiedad. Veite minutos después, tras la introducción de “Ectasy of gold”, los de la Bay Area de San Francisco daban el primer batatazo con “Creepeing death”, del álbum Ride the lightning (1984).
Ese fue el primer apronte de 130 minutos de continuidad trepidante. La banda, comandada por el baterista Lars Ulrich y la guitarra y voz de James Hetfield, no dio un solo respiro y lo más antiguo, por ende el material más duro, fuerte y veloz (de la “old school”, dirá alguno) fue protagonista. Quedó demostrado cuando, siguiendo con ese mismo disco, Metallica sacó del bolsillo su primer clásico: “For those the bell tolls”. Y a éste, en menos de un minuto, sucedió “Harvester of sorrow” (del álbum … And justice for all, de 1988) y el primer lento de la noche, “Fade to black”, del disco del relámpago.
La excusa de este tour mundial que protagoniza Metallica, y que en estos instantes los tiene instalados en Brasil, era presentar parte de su nuevo trabajo Death magnetic (2008). Recibido con cálidas respuestas, principalmente por recuperar parte del sonido más clásico de la agrupación, las muestras en vivo del registro son dignas de cualquier material que ejecute el cuarteto de metal y rock. “That was just your life” y “The end of line”, fueron primeros anuncios de la última placa de Metallica, que pronto se diluyó con la poderosa “Sad but true” (de Metallica o, como se le conoce, Black album, 1991), otro de los clásicos esperados por los 55 mil metaleros del lugar.
De su nueva placa sonaron los complejos cortes “All nightmare long” y “Cyanide”, demostrando que más allá de la velocidad y potencia, hay virtuosismo en las cuerdas de Metallica. Hetfield y Hammett, demostrando una vez más su cartel como uno de los grandes guitarristas del orbe, y Robert Trujillo con su bajo, se comportaban a la altura.
La pirotécnia del show entró al instante en que “One”, uno de los cortes más esperados, sonó por los parlantes. Y la fuerza se mantuvo a tope, primero con otro clásico como “Master of puppets”, cantado por todo el público, y luego con “Fight fire with fire” (también de Ride the lightning, 1984). De ahí, la banda bajó el ritmo y, tras un solo de Hammett, “Nothing else matters” fue la encargada de colocar el descanso, pero al mismo tiempo la emotividad de ver a la banda.
“Enter sandman”, también cantada a todo pulmón, marcó la ruta al final de la presentación, que culminó con tres cortes llenos de metal y poder: “Blitzkrieg”, un cover de la banda de heavy metal del mismo nombre, y una doble ración del primer disco de la banda, Kill 'em all (1983): “Whiplash” y el broche de oro con “Seek & destroy”.
Fue en ese vaivén donde Metallica supo construir su material en vivo: la mezcla de material previo al tiempo de 1996, cuando el grupo dio un giro en 180 grados en su rumbo musical, con su más reciente publicación. Junto con esto, la imponente puesta en escena y un sonido que sobrepasó todo, hicieron de la tercera visita de Metallica a Chile algo que difícilmente se pueda olvidar. Sólo como anécdota, se dice que el año 99 el sonido, algo importante para una banda como ésta, fue tan potente que el recital de ese entonces se escuchaba desde el Estado Nacional hasta Bilbao. En esta ocasión, el mito asegura que el potente gruñido thrash se escuchó, por lo menos, hasta el cerro Santa Lucía.

Nueva biografia de Metallica saldrá al mercado
El próximo mes de febrero saldrá al mercado la biografía más completa de la banda americana.
El próximo mes de febrero saldrá a la venta “All That Matters”, una nueva biografía de Metallica , que estará disponible por medio de la editora Plexus.
Según palabras de la crítica especializada, el libro de 248 páginas, escrito por Paul Stenning, será el primero en tener acceso detallado a la historia completa de la banda, desde su infancia hasta la actualidad, con entrevistas inéditas de amigos olvidados y ex-amantes.
Paul Stenning, es un periodista y biógrafo que reside en Lancashire, Inglaterra. Es conocido por realizar anteriormente biografías a grupos como GUNS N´ ROSES, SLASH y MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE.
